Interactive Brokers offers two account types with fundamentally different philosophies. IBKR Lite targets US casual investors with commission-free trading, while IBKR Pro serves active traders globally with superior execution and lower costs at scale. Here is what you need to know to choose the right one.

Zero-commission trading on US stocks and ETFs. Designed for buy-and-hold investors who trade occasionally and prioritize simplicity over advanced features.
$0 commission on US stocks/ETFs
No minimum deposit
Simple mobile and web apps

IBKR Pro
Active Trader

SmartRouting for best execution
Lower margin rates (from 4.37%)
Full Trader Workstation access
Best for active traders

The Real Cost Difference

IBKR Lite's "free" trading comes with a hidden cost: payment for order flow (PFOF). Your orders go to market makers who pay Interactive Brokers for the privilege of executing them. This can result in slightly worse execution prices, which matters if you trade in size.

IBKR Pro avoids PFOF entirely. Instead, it uses SmartRouting to find the best available price across multiple exchanges and dark pools. You pay a small commission, but active traders often come out ahead on net execution quality.

Platform and Tools

Both account types access the same platforms, but with different capabilities:

Client Portal and Mobile App: Both Lite and Pro users get full access. These are user-friendly interfaces suitable for most retail investors.

Trader Workstation (TWS): Available to both, but Pro users unlock advanced features like SmartRouting, 90+ order types, algorithmic trading, and sophisticated charting. Lite users get a more limited version.

API Access: Both account types can use the IBKR API for automated trading, though Pro users may benefit more due to better execution quality.

Who Should Choose IBKR Lite

IBKR Lite makes sense if you meet all of these criteria:

  • You are a US resident (Lite is not available elsewhere)
  • You primarily trade US stocks and ETFs
  • You trade infrequently (a few times per month)
  • You do not use margin or trade options heavily
  • You value simplicity over advanced tools

For this profile, the zero-commission structure provides real savings without meaningful drawbacks.

Who Should Choose IBKR Pro

IBKR Pro is the better choice if any of these apply:

  • You live outside the US (Pro is your only option)
  • You trade frequently and want volume discounts
  • You use margin and want rates as low as 4.37%
  • You trade options and want tiered pricing (as low as $0.15/contract)
  • You need access to international markets
  • Execution quality matters to you

Most serious traders end up on IBKR Pro. The commission costs are low, and the execution quality and margin rate advantages more than compensate for small trades.

Quick Decision Guide

Rarely → Lite
Often → Pro
You can switch between Lite and Pro at any time if your needs change.

Switching Between Accounts

US residents can switch between IBKR Lite and Pro at any time through Client Portal. The change takes effect within one business day. There is no fee to switch, and your positions remain intact.

This flexibility means you can start with Lite and upgrade to Pro as your trading activity increases, or downgrade if you shift to a more passive approach.

The Bottom Line

For most investors outside the US, the choice is already made: IBKR Pro is your only option, and it is an excellent one. For US residents, IBKR Lite offers genuine value for casual investors who trade US stocks infrequently.

But if you trade actively, use margin, or care about execution quality, IBKR Pro is worth the small commissions. The tiered pricing rewards volume, and the SmartRouting system provides measurably better fills than the PFOF model.
