Lightyear Business Account Review 2026: Fees, Bonus and Drawbacks

Verdict: The Lightyear Business Account is a practical option for eligible UK limited companies that want to invest excess company cash without paying a monthly platform or custody fee. It combines GBP, EUR and USD balances with access to stocks, ETFs and money market funds. It is not a replacement for a day-to-day business bank account, and the investment risk, LEI cost and six-month reward condition make it unsuitable for some companies.
The account makes most sense when a company has cash beyond its near-term operating needs and wants a relatively simple way to invest it. A business that needs a full banking stack, advanced trading tools or certainty that its capital will not fall in value should look elsewhere.

What is the Lightyear Business Account?
Lightyear's UK business account is an investment account for UK-registered limited companies that meet its eligibility and industry-risk requirements. It gives a company one place to hold GBP, EUR and USD and invest in stocks, ETFs and money market funds.
The distinction between an investment account and a bank account matters. Lightyear can provide a home for an agreed portion of excess company cash, but it should not be treated as the company's complete banking setup. Money needed for payroll, suppliers or other near-term commitments may be a poor match for investments that can fall in value.
The person opening the account must first create and verify a personal Lightyear account. The business account is then registered separately. Every company also needs a Legal Entity Identifier, or LEI, before it can invest. Note that an LEI is not needed to invest in money market funds. However, Lightyear requires an active LEI to claim a promotional reward.

How the business bonus works
The headline offer is a reward worth up to £300, but £300 is the ceiling rather than the typical outcome. Lightyear publishes four probability bands:
| Reward value | Probability |
|---|---|
| £30 to £50 | 80% |
| £51 to £75 | 15% |
| £76 to £150 | 3% |
| £151 to £300 | 2% |
The reward is credited to the business account as a fractional share, ETF or money market fund. Standard Lightyear charges can still apply to it, including a currency-conversion fee where relevant.
The six-month condition deserves as much attention as the maximum reward. The reward becomes withdrawable after six months. If the company partly or fully withdraws its initial net deposit during that period, Lightyear can remove the reward. The business remains able to access its money, but an early withdrawal can sacrifice the promotion.
How to qualify and enter the promotion code
In the current Lightyear web app, open the account menu in the top-right corner. Under Open a new account, choose Business account. The first business screen says Open for business. Selecting Get started opens the company-search step, where the country can be selected and the business can be found by its registered name or registration number.

- Create and verify a personal Lightyear account.
- Register the UK limited company's Lightyear Business Account.
- Switch to the business profile, then open Settings, Account, Promotions and Add a promo code. The business account must have been registered within the previous 15 days.
- Use an existing LEI or obtain one through Lightyear.
- Complete business verification and deposit at least £1,000 within 45 days.
- Keep the initial net deposit in the account for six months if the company wants to retain the reward.

The customer must also have redeemed no more than one promotional code in total. Lightyear's promotion terms govern eligibility, reward allocation and removal, so they should be checked before funds are transferred.
Lightyear Business Account fees
There is no monthly account fee and no custody fee, but that does not make every transaction free. Trading, currency conversion, card deposits, funds and the LEI can all create costs.
| Item | UK business-account cost |
|---|---|
| Monthly fee | £0 |
| Custody fee | £0 |
| LEI generated in the app | £42.50 plus VAT for one year |
| Currency conversion | 0.35% |
| US stocks | 0.1% per order, capped at $1, with a $0.10 minimum |
| UK stocks | £1 per order |
| EU stocks, bonds, ETNs and ETCs | €1 per order |
| Eligible ETFs | No execution or custody fee. Fund manager fees and potential FX fees can apply. |
| Money market funds | 0.15% or less, plus a 0.10% BlackRock fund manager fee |
| Bank transfers in and out | £0 |
| Card deposits | 0.6% |
The 0.35% currency-conversion charge is easy to overlook. A company that regularly converts substantial balances between GBP, EUR and USD should calculate that cost alongside its trading fees. Bank transfers are the cheaper funding method because Lightyear does not charge for them, while card deposits cost 0.6%.
The LEI is another real cost. Companies that already have a valid LEI can use it. Companies without one can obtain a one-year LEI in the app for £42.50 plus VAT. That expense reduces the value of the introductory reward, especially when the reward lands in the most likely £30 to £50 band.
What can a company invest in?
Lightyear provides access to thousands of stocks and ETFs. The business account covers American and European markets and supports balances in GBP, EUR and USD. That gives a company a relatively simple route to hold multiple currencies and build a portfolio from the same account. Lightyear's live public and logged-in surfaces currently show different exact instrument counts, so the current range should be checked before applying.
Eligible ETFs have no execution or custody fee, although fund manager charges and potential currency-conversion fees still apply. Individual stock trades carry the market-specific charges shown above.
Money market funds provide another option for allocating company cash, but they must not be confused with bank deposits. Lightyear fees are 0.15% or less, plus the BlackRock fund manager fee at 0.10%. Both are subtracted from the variable rate. Capital remains at risk. This is an investment product.
Safety, regulation and money market fund risk
Lightyear U.K. Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under FRN 987226. That is a regulatory fact, not an FCA endorsement of Lightyear or its investments.
The protection position depends on where the company's money sits. FSCS deposit protection applies only to eligible client money held with UK banks. It does not apply to qualifying money market funds. A money market fund is an investment rather than a bank deposit, so its value is exposed to investment risk.
The same broad principle applies to stocks and ETFs: their market value can fall as well as rise. A company should therefore separate operating cash from money it is prepared to invest and assess how much liquidity it may need during the six-month promotional period.
Material drawbacks
The reward encourages a six-month commitment
The initial net deposit is not formally locked, but withdrawing any or all of it within six months can cause Lightyear to remove the reward. Companies with unpredictable cash needs should not let the bonus influence how much working capital they move.
The maximum reward is unlikely
The £151 to £300 band has a 2% probability. By contrast, the £30 to £50 band has an 80% probability. The offer should be evaluated on its published distribution, not only on the maximum shown in the headline.
An LEI adds cost and administration
An LEI is required. Lightyear's one-year in-app option costs £42.50 plus VAT, although an existing LEI can be used. For a company opening the account mainly to claim the promotion, that cost can absorb much of the most likely reward.
Currency conversion can add up
The 0.35% conversion fee applies when moving between currencies. It may be modest for occasional transactions, but repeated conversions or larger balances make it more important.
It is not a complete business bank account
Lightyear is designed for investing and managing an investment balance in several currencies. A company that needs a full day-to-day banking stack will still need a dedicated business bank account.
It will feel limited to some active investors
The straightforward product may suit a company making occasional, long-term investments. Businesses that require advanced trading tools should compare specialist platforms before choosing it.
Who should use the Lightyear Business Account?
The account is a credible fit for an eligible UK limited company that:
- has excess cash beyond near-term operating requirements;
- wants access to stocks, ETFs or money market funds from one account;
- values GBP, EUR and USD balances;
- prefers no monthly platform or custody fee;
- accepts investment risk and the cost or administration of an LEI; and
- can leave the initial net deposit untouched for six months without constraining the business.
It is a poor fit for a company that:
- needs a replacement for its main business bank account;
- cannot tolerate a fall in the value of invested capital;
- may need the promotional deposit back within six months;
- does not want to obtain an LEI; or
- requires advanced trading functionality.
Final verdict
The strongest case for Lightyear's Business Account is not the headline bonus. It is the combination of no monthly or custody fee, a clear transaction-fee schedule, three currency balances and access to a broad range of stocks and ETFs. For a UK limited company with genuinely excess cash and straightforward investment needs, that is a useful package.
The trade-offs are equally clear. Capital is at risk, money market funds are not bank deposits, an LEI has a cost, currency conversion is not free and the reward depends on leaving the initial net deposit in place for six months. The most likely reward is also far below the £300 maximum.
Lightyear is worth considering when those limitations fit the company's treasury plan. It should not be used to stretch for a bonus with cash the business may soon need.
